In 1992, Dark Cave (Hang Toi Cave) was discovered by the Royal British Cave Association and named as the Dark cave due to the dense darkness covering every corner of the cave.
The Dark Cave Phong Nha is 5,258m long, 80m high, and 50m wide, including 2 doors: the front door borders the Chay River (30m high, more than 10m wide), and the back door borders the forest (50m high, 20m wide). Inside the Dark Cave, there are many stalactites with diverse shapes and colors. The old stalactites have turned color, some are lemon yellow, some are white lime, others are moss green. In particular, Hang Toi cave owns stalactites with parasitic ferns – rare to see in other caves.
According to scientific researchers, these stalactites are the vestiges of the period of strong geological movement. Toi cave also has sections of underground river tens of meters deep, a natural freshwater lake named Thuy Tien, and a muddy lake about 20m2 wide with essential minerals good for human health. In addition, the area of Dark cave Vietnam is also home to animals such as bats, swallows, etc, especially the Ha Tinh langur – the primate species listed in the Vietnam Red Book.
