Hang En Cave Introduction
Mention about Phong Nha national park, we immediately think about the “cave paradise” of the world. And if you could not afford to explore the world’s largest cave Son Doong, so Hang En cave is the ideal choice! Explore Hang En cave, you will almost enjoy the half of Son Doong cave and experience all the interesting activities such as trekking the primary jungle, camping in the fabulous cave, admire the stalactites created by nature, etc.
The best time to explore Hang En cave
Located deep in the karst complex of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. And to explore the Hang En cave, you have to go through the runway pass; wading streams nearly 11 km, so to ensure safety, Hang En is only suitable for exploring in the dry season from about April to August every year. Because the water level in the forest streams and underground rivers in the cave has dropped. And especially in this season, you will see butterflies gliding in herds along the stream like entering a fairyland.
What should you prepare for the expedition?
Good health: Join this expedition, you will have to pass nearly 22 km, including the high, long, and slippery Ba Giang slope challenge. The starting point for the trek into the deep forest. Therefore, you need to exercise and especially should do a lot of walking at least 2 weeks before your trip.
Book Hang En tour in advance: Currently, there are only a few companies that are licensed to operate the Hang En tour so to make sure the availability, you must book the tour in advance!
Clothing and belongings: You should wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants that are light, quick-dry, and absorb sweat well. And prepare at least 2-3 pairs of long socks to avoid insect bites. In addition to the clothes to wear on, you should prepare an extra set to change when you sleep in the cave. Moreover, you should bring sunglasses, swimwear, toothpaste, insect sprays, and some sweets in case you need more energy. Please note, clothing and belongings should be minimal and light.
Camera/phone: It is recommended to fully charge the battery to save memorable moments.
HANG EN CAVE EXPEDITION 2 DAY 1 NIGHT
Day 1: The Primary Jungle Trek
At 8 am, you have to be at the meeting point on the campus of the company; enjoying a delicious cup of coffee while taking in the peaceful scenery of the Quang Binh village on the Son river. About 15 minutes later, the tour guide in charge of the delegation took attendance of the members, give you some information about Hang En; safety notes for the trip, and handed a disclaimer for the delegation members to sign. After that, you will receive trekking equipped tools by the travel agency such as helmets; flashlights, waterproof bags, and shoes.
About 9 o’clock, the car took the group to cross the trail to reach the starting point of the journey; the ranger station area at Km 35 on Ho Chi Minh road. About 10 o’clock, we officially started the journey by downhill Ba Giang pass with a stretch of more than 1.5 km.
About 12:30, we will have a lovely lunch in the beautiful wild jungle. After lunch, we continue the journey towards Dong village. After 15 minutes of rest in the village, we had the opportunity to know more about Ban Doong.
By about 3 pm, the Hang En cave entrance in the middle of the mountain facing out gradually appeared. Hang En has 3 doors in total, one door in the middle of the mountain as shown below, 2 doors at the foot of the mountain front and back. The back door of the cave is the path to the entrance to Son Doong cave.
When the cave is more than 500 meters away; the group stops to wear a helmet and make sure the headlamp is working well before entering the cave.
At 4 pm, you will get the tents and store your luggage. Dressed in swimsuits, you freely sank in the cool water after a long challenging day. Have dinner and sleep in the cave camp.
Day 2: Explore the beauty of Hang En Cave
At 7 am, we will have breakfast, take some wonderful photos of the Hang En cave and enjoy the new day in the 3rd largest cave in the Phong Nha Ke Bang national park.
At 8 o’clock, the group is again equipped with helmets and headlights ready to explore the cave in the following direction. In the cave there are many stalactites, fancy stalagmites have formed hundreds of years old. While accompanying the group, the tour guide will give us the formation and chronology of important stalactites.
The group carefully crossed the underground river branches in the cave, where the water was flooded above the knee. The back door of Hang En is also beautiful and majestic. The high stone cave creates an arch, revealing behind is a dense primitive forest. This is the place where Pan and the mysterious Neverland are filmed and is also known as the only gateway to Son Doong cave.
After admiring the wild and majestic beauty of Hang En Cave. Get back to the campsite via the river passage and enjoy lunch in the cave. Finally, we say goodbye to Hang En and head back up the river valley. Enjoy a cold beer before heading back to Phong Nha. Our private car will transfer us to Phong Nha at around 17:00.
